Nearly 2 years ago my husband and I decided the children needed to engage in a regular program that would include movement, structure, interaction with others, discipline, and respect. We choose Taekwondo.
We took the youngest 4 children and one of the teens for a trial class. They were shy and timid at first. The youngest was 4 or 5 but wanted to do what the older ones were doing. To make him more comfortable I got out there with him for what I thought would be one class.
One class quickly became 10 and the next thing I knew I was giving the instructor my uniform size. I was overweight and out of shape. The idea of falling on purpose seemed insane. Push ups were on the wall for me and jumping jacks required an immediate run to the bathroom (iykyk). But I was learning a lot, building self confidence and felt myself getting stronger each month as I also began taking my plant-based supplement, losing weight, and staying consistently committed to my wellness journey. Mindset was everything and at first I was doing it for the kids.
Now my reasons have shifted. I am doing this for me. I am loving training alongside my growing children and practicing with each other at home. I love the relationships that have been built in the classroom and the respect that we have for each other regardless of differences or age. I never would have imagined being 47 with potential black belt goals but here I am step by step challenging not only my body but more importantly my mind as I learn new things. Here I am 3 belt and uniform sizes smaller but stronger and doing what I never would have attempted before. Here I am with accountability partners and a program that challenges me to be my best. How are you challenging yourself today and who are your accountability partners?
